Duty 11: Emergency or Unusual Situations

Learner will demonstrate proper procedures for handling emergency or unusual situations. Learner will also explain job steps listed, why they are conducted, any associated risk, and how to implement appropriate controls.
Account for all personnel
- Ensure that employees know where to gather
- Ensure employees know where emergency supply car is located
- Ensure employees know their assigned job duties in case of emergency
Ensure Communications
- Notify Surface personnel and responsible person designated by the operator
- Provide accurate information as to the location and what the emergency is
- Request assistance if needed
- Request transportation if necessary
Make sure that all SCSRs are gathered and available
Assess situation 30 CFR § 75.1714
- Don't minimize possible seriousness of situation
- Remove all personnel out by affected areas
- Direct workforce at site
- Instruct all employees to do a personal assessment for hazards as they approach a problem. Stop, Look, Analyze, Manage
Fire/Explosion 30 CFR § 75.1500, 30 CFR § 75.1501, 30 CFR § 75.1502, 30 CFR § 75.1503, 30 CFR § 75.1504, 30 CFR § 75.1505
- Refer to written firefighting plan
- "First few minutes are the most critical"
- Prepare to evacuate
- Don't minimize possible seriousness of the situation
- Make sure all SCSRs are together 30 CFR § 75.1714
- Make sure they know escape routes 30 CFR § 75.1505
- Prepare to barricade, if necessary
- Know where emergency supply car is located 30 CFR § 75.1100-2(i)
Inundations (water, gas) 30 CFR § 75.1500, 30 CFR § 75.1501, 30 CFR § 75.1502, 30 CFR § 75.1503, 30 CFR § 75.1504, 30 CFR § 75.1505
- Account for all persons
- Hit emergency stop on power center
- Withdraw to a safe location
- Ventilate area (in case of gas) if possible
- Refer to escapeway and evacuation plan
Serious Injury
- Make sure area is safe
- Provide first aid
- Arrange for immediate transportation
- Request Ambulance
- Request MET/backup
- Communications with surface
Roof Falls (unintentional)
- Account for all persons
- Check for methane gas 30 CFR § 75.323
- If gas is detected, hit emergency stop on power center (see gas inundation procedures)
- See gas inundation procedures
- Danger off all approaches
- Prepare to support area
- Refer to unintentional roof fall plan roof falls related to anchorage, and/or support
- Report to mine management immediately
